Curatorial Narrative In the late 19th century, Adolph von Menzel’s realist style was already beginning to recede from favor with the artistic establishment, but he persisted in his commitment to depicting everyday life with unvarnished truth. His two studies of a woman’s left arm holding a child’s hand, created in 1893, demonstrate this preoccupation with quotidian reality through their soft brushwork and attention to detail.
