Curatorial Narrative “Silesia” by Adolf Rosenberg, created in 1905, occupies a pivotal position within the trajectory of early 20th-century Expressionism. The artist’s bold, figural style eschews the representational conventions of his contemporaries, instead channeling a deep sense of emotional urgency into his work. Here, we find an example of Rosenberg’s characteristic intensity, as he harnesses a vibrant palette to convey the turmoil and discontent that characterized Germany at the turn of the century. Upon enlargement to 44×61 inches, “Silesia” assumes a commanding presence, its chromatic structure radiating outward with unyielding force. The viewer is drawn into a spatial rhythm governed by the dominant sweep of reds and blues, which propel the eye through a dense thicket of greens and earth tones. As light catches the print, the atmospheric weight of the image shifts, imbuing the space with an almost tactile sense of depth.
