Curatorial Narrative The “Portret van Jan Toorop” by Albert Hahn is an exemplary expression of the artist’s technical mastery and visual intent. Painted in 1904, this work falls within the nascent period of Expressionism, a movement that sought to capture the emotional depth of the human experience through distorted forms and vivid color palette. Here, however, we find Toorop adopting a more subdued approach, employing a linear brushwork that imbues the subject with an air of restraint. The decision to render this portrait in black and white effectively amplifies the sense of introspection, while also underscoring the artist’s preoccupation with the interplay between light and shadow. As we consider the scale of this work, its spatial depth and compositional structure assume a more pronounced significance. When enlarged to 44×53 inches, the chromatic structure begins to exert a profound influence on the surrounding environment. Th
