Curatorial Narrative In the Atlas of the Munsell color system Pl.06, Albert Henry Munsell presents a scientific exercise in chromatic classification, defying traditional notions of artistic expression. Conceived in 1915, this early modern seascape is an anomaly in Munsell’s oeuvre, as it eschews representational detail for a focus on color relationships and atmospheric effects. The brushless palette, comprising green, red-purple, and neutral gray hues, creates an otherworldly marine environment that transcends the literal depiction of a seascape. When enlarged to 56×44 inches, Pl.06’s chromatic structure and spatial rhythm become even more pronounced. The cool greens and grays dominate the composition, imbuing the space with an atmospheric weight that demands attention to material pairing. For instance, the muted tone of a gray-green quartzite countertop could harmonize with the color system, while warm-toned woods like walnut or
